The University of New England (UNE) has marked a major milestone in its commitment to the Tamworth region, officially appointing North Construction & Building Pty Ltd to construct the new UNE Tamworth Central campus.
The state-of-the-art facility, located at the old velodrome site on Peel Street, is set to commence construction in early 2026 and will welcome students in early 2028.
UNE Vice Chancellor and CEO, Professor Chris Moran, said the announcement is positive news for both the university and the community. “The appointment of North Construction to the new Tamworth Campus demonstrates UNE’s continued investment in and commitment to the Tamworth regional community,” he said. “We look forward to keeping the community informed of the construction progress and I am sure it will be a sight to behold for many who commute in and around the Tamworth CBD.”
This year UNE has made a significant investment in community engagement and Academic support, including the addition of an Academic Skills Advisor who is coordinating the UNE Foundations Program locally, allowing locals to prepare for university and earn credit towards a degree. He is also offering students personalised support with their study, including essay writing, referencing and formulating study plans.
The University has also recently hired an academic in Early childhood Education and has just recruited a new position for Exercise and Sports Science. These new positions are purposefully recruited to work closely with Tamworth schools and the community, and we look forward to announcing more employment opportunities in the new year.
“UNE is continuing to scale-up its academic and professional staffing cohort in Tamworth and current students will start to see further student support in the coming months," he said. "We look forward to increasing our capacity on the ground in Tamworth in the lead-up to our campus’ scheduled opening,” Professor Moran said.
UNE is looking forward to further engagement with the community and businesses as the course options and delivery model for the Tamworth campus are further refined.
