Think local, shop local to keep our regional economy strong

Make the choice to shop locally and you could drive home this winter in a brand-new Hyundai Venue. That’s the challenge Tamworth Business Chamber is putting to shoppers with the launch of this year’s Think Local, Shop Local campaign.

Make the choice to shop locally and you could drive home this winter in a brand-new Hyundai Venue.

That’s the challenge Tamworth Business Chamber is putting to shoppers with the launch of this year’s Think Local, Shop Local campaign.

Now in its eight year, Think Local, Shop Local delivers significant dollars back into the region’s economy, giving business a much-needed boost as discretionary spend tightens and growing interest in online shopping erodes local market share.

“Whenever you shop you have a choice – you can either spend it with a locally owned business, or you can jump online, or even head to the city and spend outside of our region” explains Tamworth Business Chamber President, Dave Errington.

“If you choose the latter, your money leaves Tamworth and it’s gone, forever.

“When you support local business, you are not only supporting the local economy and the employment of local people, you are also indirectly supporting your wider local community.

“Local businesses sponsor local community groups, sports teams and valued community services. They live in our region and contribute to our reputation as a great place to live, work and visit” continued Mr Errington,

In return, shoppers will be rewarded for their loyalty – with a chance to win a brand-new Hyundai Venue or take home a $100 gift voucher from Penrose Meats or Transwest Fuels thanks to bonus draws conducted after each weekly key draw.

From today, anyone who spends $30 or more at participating retailers will be in the running to win.

Shoppers can enter by placing their receipt and completed entry form into any of the competition barrels - located at Centrepoint Tamworth, Tamworth Shoppingworld, Chamber’s office in Fitzroy Street or Tamworth Regional Council Customer Service offices in Tamworth, Manilla and Barraba.

Shoppers must then tune into “Macca in the Morning” on 88.9FM every Wednesday at 10.30am to see if they’re one of 10 weekly key winners. One name will be drawn from the barrels every week and read live on air. The winner must call the station by 4pm that day to claim their key or it jackpots.

The 10 lucky winners will then be invited a special ceremony in Fitzroy Plaza on Sunday 20 July where the lucky winner’s key will unlock the car.

Local business can still register for the campaign, which is free for Chamber members or comes at a nominal fee of $100 for non-members.

“We understand that the cost of living is tough right now but so too is the cost to do business, so if you are making a purchase, do it locally” explains Mr Errington.

“Local business owners are your friends, family and neighbours and our annual Shop Local campaign is a simple way to say “I put my community first.

“With overseas sites like Temu growing in popularity, online shopping remains a significant threat to small business. Online spending now accounts for a significant portion of total retail spending, with some estimates suggesting it has now reached 22% in Australia.

“With the support of generous local sponsors including Tamworth Regional Council, Woodleys Motors, Tamworth Shoppingworld and Centrepoint Tamworth, we want achieve a more level playing field for local business in our region” he said.
