The Tamworth Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) works to deliver programs that benefit Aboriginal people in line with community-driven priorities. Established in 1984 under the NSW Aboriginal Land Rights Act, the Tamworth LALC has now been operating for over 40 years and continues to grow its impact and membership - exceeding 1,200 people – through our commitment to improving outcomes for Aboriginal families in Tamworth and beyond.
Growing Local Housing and Community Support
As a local housing provider, Tamworth LALC manages 23 homes across Tamworth, ensuring secure tenancies and long-term stability for Aboriginal families. Beyond housing, the organisation delivers a suite of programs designed to empower young people and strengthen community wellbeing. These include Bounce Back, the Tamworth Opportunity Hub, the Aboriginal Community Connector, the Post-School Support Officer, and YGD Group – Fresh Footprints, a Tamworth LALC social enterprise. Strengthening and sharing cultural knowledge is a key priority of the Aboriginal community and these are at the heart of the LALC’s Bumbira Arts and Culture Program, Walaaybaa Rangers, and Junior Ranger initiatives.
Amongst its offerings, Tamworth LALC holds a range of contract and fee-for-service capabilities spanning environmental management, grounds maintenance, small construction, and repairs and maintenance. The LALC also operates a rural property with facilities ideal for meetings and small conference events - providing a unique setting for organisations seeking a peaceful, fully equipped venue.
Fee for Service and Contract Initiatives
Central to Tamworth LALC’s environmental initiatives is the Walaaybaa Ranger team, which blends traditional Gomeroi knowledge with contemporary ecological practice. The Rangers’ work encapsulates establishing new tree corridors, managing waterways, monitoring and management of flora and fauna species, seed collection and revegetation, cultural burning and more. This work enhances biodiversity, protects cultural heritage and promotes sustainable land management - delivering both environmental and cultural outcomes guided by deep community values.
Trelawney Station: A Cultural Retreat on Country
The Tamworth LALC’s Somerton property, Trelawney Station, offers a culturally rich and immersive experience for groups seeking a unique retreat or event venue. As a wholly Aboriginal-owned property, Trelawney provides an authentic on-Country setting. With comfortable accommodation, flexible workshop and meeting spaces, set within a serene natural landscape, it is an ideal location for planning days, team retreats and cultural programs.
The Tamworth Local Aboriginal Land Council continues to expand opportunities, preserve cultural heritage and support future generations. Its growing suite of programs and enterprises reflects a deep commitment to community-led solutions.
